The influence of pre-writing skills on handwriting accuracy

The present work analyses the common path between motor skills and the development of manual writing, exploring the crucial role that pre-graphism and motricity education play in the prevention and accommodation of dysgraphia. Considering dysgraphia as a neurodevelopmental disorder, distinct from learning difficulties, neurobiological causes and emotional impact on children are, also, considered. Indeed, writing is primarily a complex motor action whereas the its serialization become an enhancer of cognitive resources essential for learning. In support of this thesis, a case study was conducted in a primary school. Through a holistic approach, the teaching intervention demonstrated its effectiveness in improving students' graphomotor skills, with a morphological improvement in the quality of manual writing. The results confirm that a well-structured pre-graphism education represents a valid support and scaffold tool for writing.
